Focus group: Summary

Overall the people we interviewed thought our second thriller idea was the best idea to get higher marks in our media coursework, they thought a red herring would make the thriller much better and effective. Their ideas and opinions will help improve our thriller for the better, it gave us an insight to what other people may think about thrillers in general.

Idea Focus Group

In our media class today we look at past students opening thriller to give us ideas on how our thrillers should look like. We looked at good openings and bad openings so we can identify what our thriller should consist of and what we should avoid so that we can hit as many positives as we can to make our thriller as good as possible

Positives

-        The music went well with the film
-          Good use of diegetic sound at appropriate times ( Breathing/squeaking)
-          The titling font was effectively used as it corresponded with the theme of the film
-          The acting was very good and convincing
-          Good use of P.O.V

Negatives

-          The titling was difficult to read
-          The beginning of the film, didn't go with the end of the film, they didn't link.

The two ideas

Idea one

The first idea we thought of in my group was to have our thriller's main location to be in a hospital/graveyard. Our idea consisted of a person waking up in an hospital with confused, with no idea on what their doing there. She then begins to have short period flashbacks thinking it must have been what happenend. These flashbacks consist of supernatrual activites as the person first finds him/herself in a hospital and she 'knocks a cup of tea on the table on the side ontomthe floor', a series of other activites happen but the person end up being chased to a graveyard where she sees some sort of zombie appear out of nowhere, the scene ends after this. The audienece will at first believe that they are flashbacks on what happened and the reaosn for her being in the hostital when really there premonicions on what is due to happen as the film goes back to the footage of the person being in a hopital, does the the exact things she did in her flashback and as she knocks over the tea she realises that something supernatrual is happen and as she walks out her room to inspect she same zombie which she saw in the grave yard suudenly appears behind her/him.

Idea two

Our second idea consisted of a couple of teengaers, hooded up giving a thug impreesion. The spot a teenge women on her own approaching an alley, the teenge boys she it as an oppourtunity to robb/rape he so they follow her into the alley where they attacked her. The camarea then gaps away from the action so all can be heard is music ad diegic sounds of screaming, banging and footprintes. At this point the audinece will think that the helpless, innocent women had just been attacked and in need of help. The audinece then relelise to not be the case as we a glimpse of the women walking out of the other end of the alley with a sinical/evil look in her face as she continues her jorney to where ever she was going leaving the mystery on what happend to the teengers and who the strange women was.

Recipe for a James Bond Thriller

In every of the 007 films James Bond is assigned to a particular mission which he must complete. He comes across a variety of obstacles before accomplishing his mission, one of this is a villain who is of the same or superior power to him who tries to stop him. Mr Bond always overcomes these obstacles and complete his assignment in the end.

Some of the typical aspects in James Bond Thrillers consist of himself looking looking very smart and rather dashing at majority part of the film.  There is always a sexy women who Mr Bond always seen to be attracted to, the chances of him getting the lady is always high as 9/10 he ends up making love to. He is also refereed to as 007 his secret code name as his always assigned to do missions which always consists of violence, exhilarating and fast pacing action such as car chases and extraordinary fight sequences. In the final scene Mr Bond is normal trapped somewhere, often in an island, he always overcomes the odds and triumphs as he saves the day.
All of the James Bond films are located in an exotic place making the fast tempo action more interesting and engaging to watch due to the rather obscured type of scenery. The most obvious/ well known element in all of the Jame Bond films is the exciting stunts which the films consist of throughout. They are a driven action thriller with a range of eye catching stunts which will leave the audience on the edge of there seats.
There is is always the a famous John Barry music played in the background at curtain stages in any James Bond film. This use of diegic sound has become a theme tune as it is respective in every of the films. This song is what promoted the film and is now recognized by a large population of people worldwide.

The opening scene of these James Bond thrillers are often eye popping and stunt-driven.

Jame Bond: Sky-Fall (2012)
Director: Sam Mendes
Writers:  Neal Purvis, Robert Wade,
Stars: Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem and Naomie Harris

James Bond's loyalty to 'M' is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.

The newest James Bond film out is 'Sky-Fall' which delivers the incredible and consistent action we come to expect from a James Bond film. These an exciting twist at the beginning as we think Bond has died but the reality is that he faked his death, comes back later on in the film and does what he normally does in Bond film and saves the day. This is not just an exciting, action packed typical Bond film but it also has a very interesting tale as a new story unfolds the truth and the past is revealed. James Bond in this film has become more than just a comic book hero.

Bond will always be about the same things which is evident in Sky-fall, some the of the elements seen in past James Bond films such as 'the sexy girl who he is attracted to' and him completing this mission at the end.
This is defiantly a must see film and many critics that have anointed Sky-fall has said to be the best James Bond film ever made.

Past student thriller analyse: The Night Walker

In our media class today we look at past students opening thriller to give us ideas on how our thrillers should look like. We looked at good openings and bad openings so we can identify what our thriller should consist of and what we should avoid so that we can hit as many positives as we can to make our thriller as good as possible.

Manchurian Candidate Analysis

In my media class was watched the newest 2004 The Manchurian Candidate. The original film was made in 1962, this has a similar plot to the 2004 action paced extraordinary.

This version has more of a racial element to it as it only has white men in it, it's in black and white. There is hardly any women in this film and although one or two women are shown they don't have a big part in the film, they haven't got a main role which take us back to when society was actually like this women had roles of housewives so politics wouldn't of been spoken among woman, men were far more dominate. This film was directed by John Frankenheimer all the actors of that time where white the country was dominated by whites.

The new 2004 version The Manchurian Candidate is even more thrilling and intense graphical violence than the original. This American thriller film is based on the 1959 novel of the same name by Richard Condon, and a re imagining of the previous 1962 film. The film is a critique of sociopolitical messages from the early '60s Cold War era with the same content as the original version. The film is about a government conspiracy involving a former Korean POW, Sergeant Raymond Shaw (Liev Schreiber), who was thought to have been brainwashed by the Communists to be an assassin. The original version in 1962 has very much been updated which suit the more modern audience by new director Jonathan Demme, written by  Daniel Pyne and Dean Georgaris starring Denzel Washington who has the leading role in the film, Liev Schreiber, Meryl Streep, Jon Voight and Jeffrey Wright. Critics has said 'This film is gripping and thought provoking. I loved every minute of it'. highlighting the positive affects it has on the viewers after watching, this film is a thriller sensation with elements of a typical thriller but also overlaps with other genres which is why i highly recommend others to watch regardless of genre Favorites, you won't be disappointed

This film has used suspense, red herrings & cliffhangers which are used extensively. The genre is flexible & can engage the audience through a dramatic rendering of psychological social & political tension. The villain who is the president is a driven plot, whereby he presents obstacles that the hero must overcome.

The prelimanary excerise

In my media lesson today we was asked to complete a preliminary exercise which demonstrates the factors of continuing editing; Match on match action, Eye-line match, Shot/ reverse shot, 180 degree shot, Attempt to create graphic match(optional).

We were split into groups in order to compete this task. My group successfully managed to have all this elements in the short video we made apart from graphic match.

We did use all the cinematography we were told to use and also included a close up shot

and a mid shot using pan as a camera movement.

Analyse

Overall we think that it was a successful attempt for our first filming  We successfully achieved the eye-line match as you can see Seye looking at his watch the a shot of his actual watch. However we didn't not achieve match-on-match action but it can bee seen that we attempted to do this as if we had moved the camera further backwards the shot of Nicks hand on the door would have been seen. We also didn't achieve the graphic image as didn't have time to be able to this. We achieved the 180 degrees rule during Nick and Seye conversation. If we were to do this again we would make our video longer and display graphic match at some point in the video, i.e. As Seye looks at his watch a footage of the sun will then follow. We would have also moved the camera further back in order to get Nicks full movement as he approaches the door when entering so that we our attempt to achieve match on match action will be achieved.

Continuity editing

Eye-Line match

We see a character lookm at something off screen and then we cut to a short of what they are looking at.For an example a footage of a person looking at his watch could be seen on screen, suddenly the footage is then cut and an image of the persons actual watch can be seen.

Match-on match

Wee see a charcter start an action in on shot and then see them continue it in the next. For an example; a footage of a person walking along a corridor then apporaches a door, the scene then cuts and a footage of the operson entering the door can be seen.

Graphic Match

The film maker can choose to place shots in a certain order so as to create a smooth tranfer from one frame to the next.
When two conscecutive shots are matched in terms of the way they look this is csalled a graphic match. For an example a shot of a clock can be viewed, the shotn is then smoothly tranfered to an image which is of ann identical shape such as an orange or the sun.

Key edits

The 180 degree rule; the 180 degree rule is a sasic guideline that states that two charcters (or other elements) in the same scene shiuld alwayss have the same right/left relationbship to each other.
If the camrea passes over the omagry axis connecting the two subjects, it is called crossing the line.

Opening Analyse

In my media class today we watched the opening to four different thrillers, all four of these thrillers were effective and unfolded e story in there own way. These thrillers were; A history of violence, No country for old men, Zodiac and Brick.

A History Of Violence

The opening of A history of violence was very quite and unsuspicious. Digeectic sound is used in this opening as there is no music of some sort, the only sound that can be heard is hising of the landscape which is a very quite buzzing which could be heard in the oputside setting. The way in which the characters at the begining of this thirller film also contriubuted in giving the of an unsuspicious and casual begining. The dress code of two of the men in the opeinin did not hint or give any impression that there would be an y glimpse of vilonce/horror as one of the men was wearing a suit giving an office/professional look and ther other was casually dressed in denium jeans and a white t-shirt. This image did not correspond at all to the viont images which are shown later on in the begining, this was very effcetcive as it didnt give anything away, the opening kept made it a mystey keeoing the audienece clueless on what could happen, the images later on in the opening would have then shocked the viewers as they was not expecting such footages, this is good as it makes the viewer want top contuinue watching the film tom find out more on what the sudden shock in the opening was about.

No Country For Old Men

The opening of 'No Country For Old Men' was very violent and horrific. The violence displayed during the opening was not as unexpected and sudden as it was in A History of violence, this is beacuse the villain in this thriller film could have easily been identified by the audience. The use of Mise-En-Scene was effectively used in this thriller, one of the aspects which was effectively used was the costume in which the villain was dressed in, he was in an all black leather jacket and trousers, the colour 'black' suggests darkness, horror and a sense of danger which the audience could see to be the case later on in the beginning as the villain displays repetive violence on innocent people. In addition there was a variety of distant and close up shots of the dessert location which was were a footage at the beginning was at which suggested no escape, a place where no one could 'help'. There is no digetic sound used in this film which also contributed in the effectiveness. This made the beginning of the film more mysterious as there is no music or sounds to hint to what sort of mood is being created. It also makes it more tense and keep the audience intreeged as they'd want to know whats going on.

Zodiac

The opening of 'Zodiac' was different to the rest as the atmosphere created and other aspects made it seem peaceful and lively, this impression was giving off by the footage's of firework and diegetic sound as the music was calm not mysterious or implications of danger. The atmosphere in the beginning was very vibrant as children for could see children running and hear them laughing. Elements such as fast pacing or mystery for a typical thriller were not displayed. This was very effective in not giving anything away and keeping the audience intrigued on what rest of film could be about.

The Birds

In my Media lesson we watched another Alfred Hitchcock film called 'The Birds'. This is a 1963 suspense horror film with is loosely based on the 1952 story 'The Birds' by Daphne Du Maurine who wrote the actual story. The stars in this were Rod Taylor (Mitch Benner) Tippi Hedren (Melanie Daniels) and Suzanne Pleshette (Annie Hayworth).

Plot

A young beautiful socialite is pecked by a seagull on a visit Bodega Bay, a quiet seaside town where she has followed a potential love interest as she went there to deliver some love birds with the intentions on not being seen, this was not the case as she was obvious in the act on her delivering the birds, she was immediately spotted by the man she potentially had interest in (Mitch Benner). As she tried to return to her car after delivering the love birds she was then struck by a seagull in the head which resulted in a deep cut in the head. This attack was thought nothing of as it was attended to by the character Mitch Benner (which then led to many other encounters they had). This attack then became frequent later on in the film to the point where it affected the whole of Bodega Bay causing to injuries, violence and fear. The violence by the birds proceeds to escalates to worrying proportions.

This horror/thriller film ended with a pioneering twist which most horror films don't have consist of. Hitchcock was an expect at leading the gaudiness down a predictable path and then changing the as the film progresses. This makes the film more effective as it ends the film with an unexpected conclusion which this film successfully has as this film 'Bird' ends with an unexpected cliff hanger as the character Mitch Benner, Melanie Daniels and Cathy Brenner drive off through the town with no idea on what is destined to happen to them. This is very effective as it keeps the audience on the edge of their seats leaves them to conclude on what happens to characters next.

The macguffin this film 'The Birds' was very clear. The first impression from the film is that it would be some sort of romance/ love film as the character Melanie Daniels wished to give a potential love admire love birds, it seemed to have an interest in him which left the audience to assume that they could possibly have some sort of romantic encounters later on in the film. As the film progresses it turned out to not be the case as some of innocent people in town started to get random attacks from birds which changed the aspects of the film being a sort of romantic love guest to a violent horrific tale.

                   Romantic encounters                                                             Horrific bird attacks

This is a typical archetypal thriller as it displays horrific and moderately violent images with a fast-pacing tempo which thrills the audience keeping them on the edge of their seats. Devices such as red herrings, plot twists and cliffhangers are used extensively which are the qualities in which thriller films consist of. A Thriller is a villain driven plot which is highlighted in this film 'The Birds' as the birds in this case are the villains, their actions were what drove the film as they displayed scenes of horrific violence and dramatic tension through out the film which made it a typical thriller archetypal thriller.
